Netflix: Umbrella Academy Season 2

Creative direction for an editorial raising awareness for the new season of Netflix’ popular show. The client wanted to use Black illustrators [inclusive of LGBTQ communities if possible] to showcase the diversity of the characters in the show. Complex decided to use talent, both established and rising, that work within the comic book/cartoon worlds to bolster the comic book roots of the show.

I assigned characters to artists I thought might be relatable to them personally. I let them run free creatively so that their art would speak to and align with their interview questions. I then designed “trading cards” featuring cropped versions of the artwork as promotion across social channels to lead the audience back to the article to see the full imagery. The article can be viewed HERE.

As someone that is Black and in the art space, this campaign was great to work on as I was able to collaborate with and highlight Black artists [as well as other communities] that aren’t always recognized in that space. It’s important for people, especially our younger audience, to see representation and diversity there and that they can be successful in it.
